The Advent of Christ - Love Like Christ
Love Like Christ

“Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14
For many of us, the Christmas season is by far one of the most exciting and fun times of the year, if not the most! With decorating the house, watching the snow fall, building snowmen, throwing snowballs, making cookies, going to the Christmas stroll, listening to Christmas music, and watching amazing Hallmark movies (unless you are my mom), it can easily be classified as “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” However, not everyone experiences Christmas the same way as others, and for some, Christmas is a season of heartache, loss, and dread. Therefore, the question we must ask ourselves is how we can love people during this busy season, and be a light that shines for Jesus despite the darkness that many people find themselves trapped in.
For starters, in John 13, Jesus washes the disciples' feet during the evening meal, where it says, “So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him” (John 13:4-5). Noticeably, Jesus was also enjoying a meal with the disciples, when he decided to take the time from his enjoyment and fun to serve others.
In this way, we should also make an effort to serve other people during this fun and eventful season, and work to prioritize others, outside of just ourselves. Later in John 13, Jesus states, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35).
When we work to love those in our communities, as well as take the time to love like Jesus, whose love is selfless, compassionate, and unconditional, we can shine the bright love of Jesus to everyone we surround ourselves with. All in all, even though this season is full of joy and the constant buzz of busy lives and holiday festivities, let us not forget to also love the people around us and remember the love of Jesus.
With love, your sister in Christ.
Response:
How can I personally work to love others in my community?
Is there someone I know, who I can actively work to love this season?
What are the different ways that I can serve people this Christmas?
