Prayer Prompt:
Pray for the elderly and lonely at Ignite.
Prayer:
Most Gracious Father, We praise You for the wealth and depth of wisdom our church has in its older generation. Give us hearts that never take them for granted. Give us eyes to see those who are lonely and struggling with advanced years. We know You are Good, and we praise You for how You have carried and blessed them with a fortitude that has built an abiding faith in their lives. May they understand the responsibility You have given them to teach younger generations about trust in and obedience to You. May we always remember to pause and listen to their years of wisdom. Give us empathy to see those who are lonely and infirm and give us a better understanding of how to love them well in every and all circumstances. Turn to them and be gracious to them when they are alone and afflicted. Bring them peace and comfort as You help them know how loved they are by You and by us. You still have important work to accomplish through them. May we be a church that loves and honors the older generation. We praise You for what they bring to our congregation.
In Your Son’s Name, Amen.
Prayer Tool:
Don’t disregard the power of short, arrow-like prayers. Many of the prayers in the bible are short and to the point, like the prayer of the tax collector in Luke 18 who simply prayed, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” God hears the simple prayers of our children, and He will hear the simple prayers and even the groanings of our own hearts. Short, arrow prayers, prayers that only take a few seconds to pray, are “shot up” to God in a moment of need or concern, or even a moment of gratitude and joy. These prayers said throughout our days, give us the idea of constant communion with the Father. We don’t have to wait until we are in our prayer closet; we can pray to Him wherever, whenever, and in whatever situation we find ourselves in. Some of the boldest prayers we can pray are some of the simplest.
Scripture:
“Even while I am old and gray, God, do not abandon me, while I proclaim your power to another generation, your strength to all who are to come.”
Psalm 71:18
