The Advent of Christ - The Peace of Jesus

The Peace of Christ

By Hannah Fraley
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

Peace… an elusive thing. Most days, it seems more like legend than fact. When was the last time you felt truly at peace? Not one single racing thought, every breath full and deep, complete calm from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Realistically, our days are filled with brains that feel more like pinball machines, “Did I reply to that important email? Have I eaten anything besides coffee today? How am I possibly going to fit all of those things into one single day? Do you SEE the division in this country?” We haven’t taken three consecutive deep breaths since who knows when. We most certainly don’t recall the last time we just sat down without that itching, desperate feeling of needing to put our hands and feet to work because there is just so much to do.

Peace sounds more like a luxury we simply don’t have time for. But what if I told you that peace can actually be woven into all of those moments? Our circumstances don’t have to change for us to enjoy peace - right here, right now. In John 14:27, Jesus tells us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

The world tells us that “inner peace” can only be achieved when our outer circumstances allow it. Jesus tells us that He doesn’t give peace like that; He gives peace that allows us to remain untroubled, unafraid, courageous, and without fear. And He gives us this peace despite what surrounds us.

Lean on Him, ask Him daily for this sort of peace… the kind that makes no sense. The kind that remains calm while the world spins out of control around you. That is the peace He brought with Him when He was born to Mary and the peace He left us with when He died on the Cross. Let Him wrap you up in that kind of peace, no matter what this life may bring.
